Fahrenheit 451 creates a world in which censorship plays a key role. Books are burned to keep information out of the hands of the people. People are over-stimulated by government regulated materials such as television, music, and radio. An equally popular dystopian novel is of course, Brave New World. While control is still a major theme, it is obtained in an entirely different way. People are scientifically produced to perform their pre-determined tasks in life. Through means of conditioning and "hypnopedia," people are programmed like machines to obey.

The governemnt outlaws information as well as the freedom of individual thought and speech. In the 21st century this remains a prevalent issue, especially in other countries, such as China. Governments limit the people's freedom of speech as well as information released in various forms of media. Guy Montag is a fireman who burns books in a futuristic American city. In Montag’s world, firemen start fires rather than putting them out. The people in this society do not read books, enjoy nature, spend time by themselves, think independently, or have meaningful conversations. Instead, they drive very fast, watch excessive amounts of television on wall-size sets, and listen to the radio on “Seashell Radio” sets attached to their ears.
